A COMMUNITY group has been awarded £5,700 in lottery funding to stage an event to mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.

Hartshill and Harpfields Occasions (HAHO) is organising a weekend of commemorative events on August 2 and 3 ahead of the centenary of Britain entering the conflict on August 4.

It is putting on an exhibition of wartime memorabilia at the Minton Centre, Hartshill, on the Saturday.

HAHO chairman Joe Andrew said: "We especially want to bring the events of 100 years ago alive for people today, particularly young people.

The first meeting, for prospective candidates for MP for Stoke on Trent Central constituency, will be held from 6.30pm - 9pm on Tuesday 14 April at North Staffordshire Conference Centre, Hartshill Road, Hartshill, Stoke on Trent ST4 7NY.


The second meeting, for City Councillors for Hartshill and Basford Ward, and Penkhull and Stoke Ward, will be from

6.30pm - 9pm on Wednesday 22 April, again

at North Staffordshire Conference Centre.


Admission is free but donations to HAHO will

be appreciated. Places will be allocated by prior reservation on a first come, first served basis.
